The dramatic Sonoma Coast AVA runs from the northern edge of Marin County all the way up to the southern border of Mendocino County. The direct influence of the Pacific Ocean keeps this region cool and foggy-the ideal climate for distinctive Burgundian varietals. This Chardonnay comes from a spot on the Sonoma Coast where Goldridge soils are so well drained that vines must take deep root in search of water and nutrients. This helps temper vine vigor to ensure concentrated varietal character in the grapes. One-third of this wine was fermented and aged in a concrete egg to enhance its bright minerality; the balance was barrel fermented and aged on the lees in 100% French oak (1/3 new). The lees were stirred twice a week-batonnage-to help build the beautiful texture that balances this wine’s vibrant acidity and minerality. The Sonoma Coast experienced optimum growing conditions in 2013. A cold winter with no hard frost led into an ideal spring, for even berry set. Over the long summer, the warm days were tempered by the region’s characteristic cool marine winds and fog, extending the growing season for slow, even ripening of Chardonnay grapes.
